2017 Remarkable River Racing Series

DAC Shelter Career Makeover Program

Building Remarkable Communities, Inc. continues its Remarkable River Racing Series in 2017 with more racing options and new race direction

BRC generates a large percentage of its program funding through the organization of running races in the community. Beginning with the Remarkable River Run 5K in September, 2014, BRC partnered with Florida Hospital Memorial Medical CenterAunt Catfish’s on the River and other community sponsors to offer a truly remarkable racing event.

2015 saw the 5K race grow in participation and stature to a 3-race series, including progressively more challenging distances: a 5K in March, a 10K in June, and a 5K and 15K in September.  In 2016, the race series added a 5K race to each of the races.

2017 will be our most exciting year yet! Partnering once again with Jennifer Florida and Final Mile Race Management for race management, Tim and Alice Neal of RaceDJ for race announcing, and Almost There Photography for professional on course and finish line photos at no charge to runners, BRC will be hosting a 5K race on February 26; a 5K and 10K race on June 11; and a 5K and 15K race on September 24. Our 2017 Race Series is presented by Florida Hospital Memorial Medical Center.

Angie Flynn, President of BRC and an avid runner and triathlete couldn’t be more enthusiastic about the growth of the Remarkable River Racing Series, saying, “We work really hard to put on racing events that we would want to participate in ourselves. Each race in the series will be a fantastic party, including the run itself, followed by a catered breakfast buffet (provided by Aunt Catfish’s on the River), and a high-energy after party with Race DJ Tim Neal, door prizes, awards, a vendor expo, and more. These races are tremendous community events that will benefit a very worthy cause.”

A portion of the proceeds from the series events benefit Building Remarkable Communities, Inc., a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation whose mission is to eradicate domestic and family violence through prevention, training, and change of mindset in our community. Funds raised from the Remarkable River Racing Series will remain in Volusia County to provide resources and desperately needed funding to support survivors of abuse and their children.

9-DACDomestic Abuse Council Shelter Career Counseling and Makeover Program

Building Remarkable Communities created and implemented a career makeover program for residents of the Domestic Abuse Council’s Volusia County Shelter in 2015.  The program offers shelter residents the opportunity to get a complete career makeover (hair, makeup, and clothing) and a career counseling session with a professional in human resources management.  The purpose of the program is to change the mindset of these women (and men) from “victims” to “empowered survivors” by introducing them to a world filled with career possibilities and an avenue of life where they are able to take care of themselves and their children without feeling trapped into returning to an abusive situation.  This program saves lives!  The next Career Counseling and Makeover Program is scheduled for November 17, 2016.
