Why Do We Give A Book To Every Runner?
We are asked this quite often and it’s certainly a fair question. Why do we give a copy of Deb Cheslow’s book, Remarkable Courage, to every runner who runs one of our Remarkable River Racing Series races – especially since Remarkable Courage never mentions the words “domestic violence” and our runners are not necessarily victims of domestic or family violence.
The answer is quite simple. The mission of Building Remarkable Communities is to eradicate domestic and family violence by changing mindsets:
- The mindset of the victims of domestic and family violence
- The mindset of the perpetrators of domestic and family violence
- The mindset of children who are affected by domestic and family violence
- The mindset of the friends and families of people who are affected by domestic and family violence
- The mindset of the organizations that serve those affected by domestic and family violence
- The mindset of the entire community at large…
Why? Because, that is what it is going to take to make a true, lasting impact on this huge problem in our society. Providing funding to help survivors of domestic abuse is important, but it only puts a band-aid on this ever-growing problem; it does not address the cause or provide a lasting solution.
Building Remarkable Communities is about providing solutions – not just for today, but also for the next generation – and it’s working. We are continually being approached by our race participants who want to share their stories of transformation that stemmed from reading Remarkable Courage.
There have been stories of people who found the courage to leave unacceptable family situations… There have been stories of people who have been able to shed their “victim’s cloak” and deal with their situations head-on… There have been people who are empowered to find the courage to pursue a long lost dream… And so much more.
All from a simple book that shows up in a race bag.
Our mission is not to put band-aids on problems. Our mission is to affect true change in our communities through education, training, and awareness that our past in no way, shape or form has to dictate our future. We have the power to change our lives right here, right now. We just have to find the courage to take action.
And THAT is what Remarkable Courage is all about.
And that is why we put a book in every single race bag.
